Eight (Special) Ways You Know Your Dog is Family

My husband and I have turned the corner on parenthood. As a family with two kids in college, the days of sleeping on the far corners of the bed so that our little peanuts could snuggle between us are long gone. The bubble baths have popped and toothbrush teaching is a sweet memory.

Enter Chloe, our happy-go-lucky goldendoodle dog. Bedtime routines are back…with late-night zoomies as an added bonus. The pitter patter of tiny footsteps have been replaced by the thud, thud, ker-plunk of an oversized muppet hauling wiggly tail around a corner to greet us. And we are (yes, really) sleeping on the edges of the bed again, so our big kiddoodle can sprawl belly-side up (with no modesty whatsoever) between us. Over the course of four fun-filled and fur-filled years, we’ve made a four-legged leap from parenthood to doodlehood…and we all love that our family has grown into a furamily.

If you know that dogs are truly family members, if you’re a proud dog mom, then these nine feel-good messages are for you. We hope they bring a smile, a laugh, or a woof!

1. You know you’re a dog mom when…

…you get that “HUH?” look after you call your dog by your kid’s name.

2. You know you’re a dog mom when…

…you daydream about your next pet-friendly family vacation. And seriously contemplate why someone hasn’t invented Disney Dog World.

3. You know your family is a furamily when…

4. You know you’re a dog mom when…

…you kinda like the sound of squeaky toys…

…because you love that smiley face behind them.

5. You know you’re a dog mom when…

…you pack a “busy bag” for you and your four-legged family member.

6. You know you’re a dog mom when…

…you bring out the kiddie pool…

…and the bubbles.

7. You know your dog is family when…

…you can’t resist surprising her with that cute squeaky toy. And it’s totally worth it.

8. You know you’re a dog mom when…

…you take a million pics. Because you know that moments like these won’t last forever.

No matter the age or stage of my kiddos or kiddoodle, I’ll always be a proud mom.

And our family will forever be a furamily.

We do all the stuff you mention above, so glad I’m not the only one who searches hopefully for dog friendly vacations! I almost don’t want to go anywhere we can’t bring the dogs!

We need to write to the people in charge!! 😉

    1. We can make it happen. With all of our cute pups and pets, it would be the best Disney yet! Teamwork makes our blogging dreams work!

  3. What a cute post! Our mom sleeps on the edge of the bed because I take up half of the bed. All 8.5 pounds of me! MOL

    1. Awww…thanks! For 8.5 pounds, it sounds like you can really sprawl out! Bet you look so cute, too!

  4. Aww, these are so cute… and SO TRUE! I love that you call her an oversized muppet… LOL. I really did laugh out loud at that one. Our dogs are our kids for now, and we absolutely checked all of these boxes!

    1. Awww…thanks so much! Always happy when we can bring a smile, a laugh, or a woof!

  5. I’m “guilty” of all of those and then some 😉 Yeah, I am a dog mom that’s for sure. I know it, Cookie knows it. Not just that, I’m her ATM – All Terrain Mom.

    1. So cute and clever! Sounds like you’re one very proud “All Terrain Mom.”

  6. Jenise. This blog just gets BETTER! I do have a “you know you’re a dog mom”……When you turn down invitations because the dog will be left alone toooooooo long! (We’ve actually done that!)

    1. Awww, Linda! Thanks so much! I love your “you know you’re a dog mom when you turn down an invitation…” message. Seriously, if we can’t bring our pooches, it can’t be that much fun!

  7. I am a total Jewish Dog Mom and even my Mom says so as she asks for pictures of me and gets Layla LOL, and yes I am her pack mule also, she is my fur kid and no one can change that

    1. LOL! I love this! I’m a proud pack mule for a fur kid, too! Thanks for following along on our adventures!

    2. That is great! I love “You know you’re a dog mom when you’re a pack mule for your pet.” That is so true! Thanks for sharing!

  8. I knew I was a dog mom the first time my older dog couldn’t go upstairs after an injury (he usually sleeps in bed with me and my husband), and I opted to sleep on the couchevery night with my dog so that he wouldn’t wake up and feel alone.

    1. Oh, that touches my heart. What a kind gesture and one that I’m sure your dog appreciated so much.Thank you for sharing.

  9. There’s a giant (over 1000 acres) park where dogs can be off-leash near here. People call it Disney World for dogs! It’s one of Mr. N’s favorites.

    1. Wow! That does sound like a Disney World for dogs! So happy to hear that Mr. N gets to have fun there!

  10. I know I’m a cat mom because most of my photos on social media and my phone are of my cats. When I meet someone who follows me on FB, they say, “we love seeing photos of your cats.” I’m sometimes called the cat lady.

    1. Cat Lady and Cat Mom…two proud titles! We love looking at your pics on social media, too!

  11. Oh Miss Jenise & Chloe Doodle, I bet you have one of the best furamilies, too! Here’s one from Mom: You know you have a furamily when you are more concerned about what you are feeding your pet than yourselves. Mew Mew!

    1. Awww…thanks, Valentine! Tell your mom that she came up with a great “You know your a furamily…” and so true, too!
