Happy Talk! The Emotional Bond Between Dog and Pet Parent

through a game of ball, a dog and her pet parent share uplifting messages with each other

Do you talk with your dog? Does your dog talk to you?

If you’re a dog mom (or dog dad or pet parent), you probably agree that dogs are family. And as family members, they’re part of our daily conversations. In fact, science says that talking with our furry friends is a sign of our intelligence.  (Nicholas Epley, a behavioral science professor, recently conducted a study on this very subject.) So if you’re chatting with your dog as you read this, you’re one very smart cookie!

Dishing With Our Dogs

I can’t remember a time when I didn’t pow-wow with my pets, chat with my cats (they were my pals when I was a kid) or dish with my dog.  The expression on their face, the look in their eyes, the wag of their tail…melts my heart every time. I like to call it “happy talk”…unspoken messages of love, caring,  and kindness that our furry friends share with us daily. Without saying a word, our canine companions speak volumes…and fill a place in our hearts that lasts forever.

So when Happy-Go-Doodle Chloe and I played a game of fetch recently, we had our own “happy talk” together that we captured on video and then set to music. We hope you’ll take a break with your pup (you both deserve it), and “catch” these feel-good messages with us. OH, and wait for it…don’t miss the outtakes at the end.

Like all dogs, kiddoodle Chloe is pure joy, love, and happiness. They inspire us to live in the moment, catch all the fun we can, and never wait for a chance to love, hug, or smile. Finally, Chloe and I don’t want to miss this chance to say…

Thanks for following along with us on our adventures, for commenting on our stories, subscribing to our blog, watching our videos, and for letting us share happy dog mom moments with you. We hope we’ve brought a smile, a laugh, or a WOOF to your day.

  1. What a cute video! I love the music and everything. I always have conversations with my animals. I have 3 cats and 3 dogs, and I’m always chatting with them.

    1. Thanks! We’re happy you enjoyed our video! It sounds like you have a wonderful furamily to chat with !

  2. Chloe, you are just too cute! As for conversations, our Mom has them with us ALL the time! And I mean all the time! It’s a good thing other people can’t hear her! MOL

    1. Awwww…thank you, Lola! Mom and I talk all the time, too! Sometimes she asks me what to put on the grocery shopping list. I tell her we need “more sticks” but I never see any in her grocery sacks. Hmmmm…maybe I’ll get fetch groceries with her next time.

  3. Cute video. Encapsulates everything we love about our fur babies. unconditional love, living in the moment and pure joy! I remember I’d talk to my girls all the time. They would meow and respond like they knew exactly what I was talking about. Smart furballs!

    1. Awww…thanks! We’re so happy to hear that you found joy in our video. Love and living in the moment and joy…life is good with our furry friends.

  4. Since Charlie is ALL BOY, I wouldn’t dare put flowers on his head….however, my granddaughters would love a flower halo! Thanks for the instructions on how to do it!
Chloe was a visitor this evening and I think Mr. Charles Wallace fell hard for her absolutely stunning cuteness!

    1. Hello, Linda and Charlie! Chloe was happy to meet Mr. Charles Wallace too! I heard they had a pawsitively awesome time and that he’s quite a handsome fella! We’ll have to get the two together again!

  5. I love the “Love Can’t Wait” reaction in the video. What a cute little video that brought a smile to my face tonight.

    1. Awww…thank you! We’re happy that we added a little extra smile to your day! “Love can’t wait” was totally spontaneous and a happy surprise brought to me by Chloe. Dogs are joy!

  6. That was the cutest video! Rama says “get up and let me out!” every morning around 6 am with a series of low woofs. She also woofs at me if breakfast is even a smidge overdue. The little conversations I have with the dogs each day could fill a book. 🙂

    1. Thank you! Rama sounds like such a smart (and punctual) pup! They fill our lives with woofs, laughter…and love.

  7. My husband likes to say they don’t understand you when I talk to the dogs but I know he’s wrong. They may not understand everything but they understand a heck of a lot! When I leave the room or the house and tell my dogs I’ll be right back I know they get it. When my Dachshund Lestat is not allowed outside due to health issues and I take the other dogs out and tell him not you, he stops and trotts back to the living room. They get a lot more than people give them credit for!

    1. You are so right! Our pets do understand more than people give them credit for. It sounds like you have an awesome furamily and that Lestat is one very smart and sweet pup.

  8. Heck yes, Dolly understands way too much! Not just “walk” but the word “go” is a big sign to her followed by “car” and more. Not to mention “good girl” which she loves but “bad dog” not so much. Sandra and Dolly

    1. Chloe loves “walk” and “go” and “car” too! Those are some of her favorite words. It sounds like Dolly is a sweetie and one very “good girl.”

  9. Oh absolutely 100%! I work from home all day and well into the evening. My husband works out of the home – long hours too. I have conversations with my Lyla (dog) and our two cats Nub and Tibet. Yes, conversations as I am sure I know what they are saying back to me in my head. Yeah, I am a bit crazy lol.

    1. How wonderful that Lyla, Nub, and Tibet can keep you company while you work from home. What happy furamily conversations you must have together!

  10. What a sweet video. Chloe looks like quite a character. Yes, of course, I talk to my animals. I thought everyone did. There are plenty of conversations to be had in this household with 6 cats, and a Bearded Dragon. I do miss having dogs, though. They were the only ones who truly understood. Thanks for making me smile.

    1. Yes, “character” is a great word to describe happy-go-lucky Chloe. She’s always up to something! We’re so happy that we could bring a smile to your day. Say “hello” to your cats and bearded dragon for us!

  11. Chloe is one happy girl. Love the fact dogs don’t need a lot of “stuff” to be happy. A favorite toy to play with a favorite human is all they need!

    1. So true. It’s the simple things in life that bring the most joy! Thanks for stopping by, Karen.

  12. Are you kidding? I talk to my dog ALL of the time and often he “talks” back (he can also SPELL, oh yes he can!) He’s a Sheltie, they’re smart like that 😉

    1. Talk and spell! Dakota sounds like one very smart sheltie! And a cutie pie, too.

  13. We totally have conversations with our dogs and sometimes it’s hilarious! They each have their own facial and body expressions, and my Husky Icy is very vocal! She lets it be known what she is thinking. Adorable video! Chloe is just so sweet and beautiful.
    Love & Biscuits,
Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them

    1. What happy furamily conversations you must have with Icy! Say “hello” to her from happy-go-doodle Chloe!

  14. My husband and I have lots of photos of our pets. We really need to take more videos too.

Great messages about love. A video is an engaging way to present them. Thanks for sharing!

    1. We’re so glad you enjoyed our video and loving messages that Chloe (and all dogs) share with us every day.

  15. I always converse with my dogs! My kids answer for my dogs, and they are pretty hysterical.

    1. Too funny! I bet your kids come up with some pretty clever answers for your dogs!

  16. Totally brilliant1 I love your video and your hugely positive message.

Even a cat lover HAS to smile as such high spirits and simply great fun. Oh and we talk to our cats all the time too. How can you not? Not talking to a family member is plain WEIRD!!!

  17. Yes! Sometimes I think he understands! 😂 Cute video hope Chloe didn’t run into to you too hard.

    1. Awww…thanks! I’m happy you enjoyed the video! Oh, and Chloe didn’t run into me hard. It was just so unexpected! I laughed…and I think Chloe did too!

  18. I absolutely carry on conversation with my pups!! They are the best therapists. 😉

    1. So true! They are our therapists…friends…coaches…teachers…and family members.

  19. Oh all the time! Mostly about things he cares about though. And he knows a lot of words at this point.

    1. Isn’t is fun to think about all the words our dogs know! I’ll bet Mr. N has a large vocabulary!

  20. SO CUTE! Loved the video! I talk to my dog all the time and she is the best listener!

    1. Awwww…thanks! You made my day! You and your dog sound like the best of friends. Tail wags and take care!

  21. Love Chloe’s happy face! Yes, we talk to our cats all the time. In fact, my husband who is Mr.Tough Guy, would often have long conversations to with our cats. When I ask “oh what did you say?” He goes “I wasn’t talking to you, I was talking to Scout. He was asking Scout, the cat, her opinion about whether he should wear that shirt for a business trip! 😹
